Elected officials and family members called for more safety measures on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn Heights Saturday during a community walk.
On April 16, Katherine Harris, 31, was fatally struck while crossing Atlantic Avenue.
"We are so sad we will never give our Katie a hug, we'll never get to hear our Katie's voice again and we will never get to watch Katie walk down the aisle, marrying the love of her life,” says Jen Barton, Harris’s aunt.
Brooklyn Council Member Lincoln Restler says dozens have been injured on the avenue due to a lack of safety precautions. He and other advocates are pushing for mid-block crossings.
"I grew up four blocks from here. Atlantic Avenue has been a death trap my whole life. We've lost seven people in just the last decade and dozens more to serious injuries,” he said.
The walk was organized after a letter written by several elected officials and neighborhood organizations was sent to the city’s Department of Transportation.
