The project in West Farms is set to create nearly 2,000 units of affordable housing. The Lambert Houses are undergoing a transformation that will take five phases to complete. The project is currently in Phase 3, which means residents in the old Lambert Houses have moved into the new buildings ahead of the demolition of the old apartments. Phases 1 and 2 brought two new buildings to the site, with the newest structure having 279 units. The entire project is set to double the number of original units and is currently being led by Dattner Architects in partnership with Phipps Houses. "The original project was about 700 units of affordable housing, and the Lambert Houses redevelopment will increase that to about 1,600,” said Keith Engel, an associate principal with Dattner Architects. “So really making a dent in the affordability crisis that our city currently finds itself in and allowing the neighborhood to grow." The project aims to bring both affordable and sustainable housing to the area. "We have these brand-new buildings that have dishwashers, microwaves, just modern buildings,” said Rosemary Ordoñez-Jenkins, deputy executive director for Community and Economic Empowerment at Phipps Houses and a former Lambert Houses resident. "What I see is that we're building thriving communities in the Bronx, and that's what we want." Phase 3 of the project is projected to be completed around 2029. The entire redevelopment is expected to take another eight years.
