Mayor Eric Adams made rounds through the boroughs this weekend, speaking for the first time since his criminal indictment.
As a man of faith, Adams made it a point to turn to religious communities for support.
He made his way to multiple services across the boroughs.
Crowds gave Adams a warm welcome as he spoke, making one thing clear that he is not stepping down.
"I'm not going to resign, I'm going to reign...I'm going to do my work. I'm going to lead this city in the direction that the city is supposed to go in to," Adams said Sunday at Emmanuel Presbyterian Reformed Church in the Bronx.
On Saturday, he appeared at a church service in Queens, and then a worship service in the Bronx. He addressed the public for the first time since his appearance in court on Friday.
Adams was hit with a 57-page indictment and five federal criminal charges and mounting calls from local leaders for his resignation.
If Adams were to resign, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams is next in the line for succession.
"When you run for public advocate, you know that if something happened, you may have to step in. That's not something you want. It's not why you run for the job, because that signals that there's something wrong. You don't want something to be wrong," Williams said in Brooklyn on Saturday.
According to the New York City Charter, the only one who can remove Adams from office is Gov. Kathy Hochul. She issued a statement on Friday which said, "While I review my options and obligations as the governor of New York, I expect the mayor to take the next few days to review the situation and find an appropriate path forward to ensure the people of New York City are being well-served by their leaders."
Adams' next court appearance is on Wednesday Oct. 2.
