A newborn was found abandoned early Thursday morning near an apartment building in Chelsea. Officials say the baby was quickly discovered by doormen and luckily EMTs were nearby.
"I don’t feel like a hero, I feel me and Patrick really worked well as a team," said Mia Chin, an EMT from Station 7.
Chin and her partner Patrick Feimer said they were just finishing their shift around 3 a.m. Thursday when a doorman from a building at 515 West 23rd St. knocked on their truck and alerted them to the shocking discovery
"It was a fresh delivery, so it probably happened moments before," Chin explained. The newborn's umbilical cord was still attached, and the baby was left bare, with no covering, lying near a support beam of the Highline.
"When I approached the infant, it was crying and cooing and waving, and I was just so happy that the child was alive," Chin added.
Both EMTs are relatively new to the field. Chin, who went to school in Harlem, has been an EMT for about a year, while her partner has two years of experience.
"We were caught off guard. Like she said, we were done for the night. We just ran over, tried to assess the situation, and when we saw it, we snapped into action and relied on our training," said Patrick Feimer.
The baby was taken to Bellevue Hospital. Meanwhile, the NYPD confirmed they have arrested 37-year-old Ayata Swann, who has been charged with abandonment of a child.
"If you have an infant or child that you cannot care for, you can bring them to a firehouse, police station, or EMS station and leave them without question," said FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, reminding New Yorkers about the Safe Haven Law.
Regarding Chin's statement on not being a hero, Kavanagh had a correction: "They are definitely heroes, both of them."
News 12 New York was told the baby is safe and doing well.
