Many Bronx residents attended an event Friday aimed at teaching and empowering victims of abuse to speak up and speak out. Take Back The Night was held at Help USA, a shelter in Crotona Park. The event supplies a platform for information and discussion about domestic violence. Materials handed out at the event note that one-third of American women report domestic violence, either physical or sexual abuse, at least once in their lifetime. Clinical Psychologist Tricia Wolanin says oftentimes people don't realize they are in domestic violence situations. Wolanin says the event is meant to empower [the victims] to talk about preventing domestic violence situations and give them a voice to talk about it. Help USA holds different health preventative events every month.
