9ds agoThe election is over, but the wait for the results is just beginning. Many races are now left up to ranked choice voting.
This is the city's first time using ranked-choice voting in a citywide election, and it could take weeks to determine who is declared a winner. No candidate won a majority outright, so now ranked choice voting will kick in.
This means the NYC Board of Elections will be looking at each and every ballot from those who voted in person and mail-in absentee ballots and will eliminate the least ranked candidates until someone gets more than 50% of votes.
As the numbers look now for the biggest race of all, Eric Adams is leading in the Democratic mayoral bid followed by Maya Wiley and then Kathryn Garcia. Curtis Sliwa won the primary for the Republican party. While the race has not been called yet, Mayor Bill de Blasio says he is pleased with the voter turnout.
The results for each could take longer than usual and could very well change quickly once absentee ballots are included. News 12 was told the NYC Board of Elections will report results starting June 28 and again every Tuesday until all the ballots have been counted.
