Advocates, lawmakers rally against budget cuts for 3-K, pre-K in NYC

Pre-K and 3-K have been hit hard by Mayor Eric Adams’ budget cuts to the tune of $400 million, according to an analysis by the Independent Budget Office.
Advocates and lawmakers hit the steps of City Hall on Thursday to rally against the cuts. City Council members, including Julie Menin, wrote a letter to the mayor asking him to:
Fully fund pre-K and 3-K
Invest in outreach to advertise these programs
Establish universal health care
Brooklyn mom Allison Lew says 3-K is crucial for her family.
“If we can make it to September when our son will hopefully have a free 3-K spot, then everything’s going to be OK. But if we get to September and we don’t have relief, we may have to leave New York City,” Lew told the crowd.
City Hall told News 12 in a statement that the Department of Education anticipates having 53,000 3-K seats available in the fall and that it will make pre-K available to all who apply.
