Thursday marked National Organ Donor Enrollment Day, and health advocates in the borough did what they could to get more donors registered.
The day was important in New York City because the number of registered donors across the five boroughs -- and in the Bronx specifically -- is dangerously low.
Health advocates say there are about 120,000 people across the state awaiting an organ. The Bronx ranks fourth out of the five boroughs in terms of eligible residents who are enrolled as donors.
Experts say becoming an organ donor can save eight lives, and that number can increase to 50 with a tissue donation.
