A new affordable housing development with more than 200 units opened Tuesday in Soundview.
The 12-story high rise on Metcalf Avenue is named after Justice Irma Milagros Vidal Santaella, the first Puerto Rican woman in the state to serve as a Supreme Court Justice in the state of New York.
Her daughter Yvette Santaella, who grew up in the Bronx, says the honor is well deserved.
“She was a force of nature. She was a determined woman. Very strong but very loving. She has a passion for the community,” she says.
Santaella Gardens took 10 years of planning and development to reach its final grand opening, which was held on International Women's Day.
"It shows we can provide fair, good, clean affordable housing for the people of our community,” says Raul Russi, of the Acacia Network.
The 250-unit building has many amenities, including a fitness center, a computer room, a rooftop garden, an after-school program and in-house laundry facility.
Most of the apartments are already filled and families have begun to move in. Eligible applicants were chosen through a lottery.
