A new affordable housing building is coming to an empty lot in Crotona Park East.
The lot, located at East 170th Street and Stebbins Avenue, is a nearly 150-unit apartment building, equipped with recreational spaces and an accessible rooftop.
“We've wanted to do this site for a long time. Obviously, a vacant lot is not the best use here. And so, we're really excited for the neighbors, for the community and for the new families to give them something much better to look at and to be a part of,” said Amy Pivak, director of pre-development planning and urban design at NYC’s Housing Preservation Development.
Pivak tells News 12 she and her team spoke to hundreds of community members to hear what they wanted to see.
Swim education, access to pools and recreation spaces were the main requests.
HPD sent out a request for proposals and awarded The Doe Fund, a local nonprofit that works with affordable and supportive housing, the project.
“We wanted it to be beautiful. We wanted it to be sustainable, and we wanted it to have a lot of space where the community can engage,” said Jennifer Mitchell, president and CEO of The Doe Fund.
Mitchell says the building will have a basketball court, pools and ample garden space.
The building will also be sustainable and energy efficient, which Mitchell says will lower utility bills and make the environment healthier.
The development team says the next steps in the process are permitting. They plan to break ground on the site in the coming years.
