Four attorneys general — from California, Illinois, Minnesota and New Jersey — will join New York’s Letitia James next week for a special "Community Impact Hearing" at SUNY Westchester Community College.

The focus of the meeting is to hear from New Yorkers about how policies from the Trump administration are affecting their lives.

In her first interview since announcing the hearing, Attorney General James told News 12's Senior Reporter Tara Rosenblum her goal is clear: to push back against what she calls federal overreach.

"I am concerned because I heard a number of, I believe, two Social Security offices, in Westchester have closed," she said. "There's been a number of layoffs, and individuals are having difficulty getting staff on the phone. I've heard from veterans. I've heard from individuals who rely upon Head Start and child care centers and 9/11 funds and the list goes on."

James says she wants to hear from New Yorkers "because it's important that we include affidavits and statements and declarations from constituents on the ground to further substantiate all the allegations that we are making in response to some of these executive orders which do not have the force of law, and oftentimes, and most of the time, are unlawful, in violation of the separation of powers act."

Westchester residents who want to speak at the hearing must submit their written testimony online. There is also an opportunity to submit questions for the attorneys general. Click here for more information.

The event will take place Thursday, May 8 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at SUNY Westchester Community College.
