For the last four years, a community fridge has been serving the Allerton community. Its founder is now turning to the community for assistance.
Ignazio Collado partnered with a Bronx teacher during the pandemic to start running it outside of his mechanic shop on Fordham Road.
He told News 12 this was his way to give back to the community when everyone was afraid to go grocery shopping or be in public.
Collado has continued his community service efforts by filling the fridge weekly with fresh produce and prepared foods.
"And this is something that I do from my heart... with no type of help. I'm trying to, you know, I ask the community to be part of this, to volunteer. This is something for everybody here", says Collado.
He told News 12 that he is looking for food donations, monetary aid, volunteers to help maintain the fridge and even someone to help with their social media.
Until then, he tells News 12 that he will continue his efforts to help the people in his community who need it most.
