With the holiday season in full swing, Amazon is working around the clock to meet the demands of last-minute shoppers in the area.
News 12 got a look inside the company’s only same-day delivery site in New York City, located in Throggs Neck, where the holiday rush is in full swing.
Step by step, workers at the facility are keeping packages on the move, fulfilling orders within hours.
“We specialize in getting the order to the customer within the same day the order is placed, ideally within a five-hour window,” said Pratik Shah, site leader at Amazon’s Bronx facility.
The facility is not only fast but efficient, thanks to cutting-edge technology.
Yellow robots transport shelves of high-demand items—ranging from electronics to apparel—directly to workers.
“We carry typically the 100,000 to 150,000 fastest-selling, most popular, most in-demand items that customers in this area want. We keep them readily accessible. The minute an order is placed, our backend systems basically tell our pickers, our packers, where the items are,” said Shah.
To manage the holiday shopping spike, Amazon says it has added seasonal staff and introduced tools to help customers keep track of their deliveries.
“We have a really cool feature where you can see ‘arrives, X number of days before Christmas,’ so customers have really been loving that,” said Smitha Rao, Amazon’s Field communications lead.
Rao also emphasized that shoppers could support small businesses while buying through Amazon.
“When you're on Amazon.com and you're shopping, look for something we call small business badges, the Small Business Badge. When you see that, you know that your money is going towards a small business. So it's really a win-win," says Rao.
