The organization Autistic Adults NYC is working to help the city’s autistic population by holding events and workshops throughout Autism Acceptance Month.
Founder Nicole Russell created the organization two years after being diagnosed with autism at the age of 23.
“When I was diagnosed, I felt like I had a lot of questions that were finally answered,” she said.
Following the diagnosis, Russell also discovered that the city lacked support groups catered to people with autism.
"I was looking for a group like this within the city. I couldn't really find much,” she said.
"We're trying to build genuine relationships and genuine friendships in our community,” she said. “This isn't like a traditional support or therapy group, it's really a social club."
