The city is taking the initiative to deter reckless driving with new legislation aimed at holding drivers accountable.
Under the Dangerous Vehicle Abatement Program, a driver who gets five red light camera violations in a year would be required to take a driving course, or risk losing their car.
The City Council passed the legislation on Tuesday. It was motivated by a deadly crash that happened in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn in March of 2018. Councilman Brad Lander sponsored the bill.
Owners who get 15-speed camera violations in a year are also subject to having their vehicle impounded if they don't complete a three-year Department of Transportation safe driving course.
City Hall says the pilot program is set to go into effect this fall.
