The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended protection for undocumented immigrants from certain countries living in the U.S. until January 2020.

The agency is now allowing illegal immigrants from Sudan, Nicaragua, Haiti and El Salvador to live and work legally in the U.S. for the next year.

Yatziri Tovar, a member of the nonprofit pro-immigration group Make the Road, says she's fighting for permanent protection in the U.S.

Some Long Islanders believe it's great move by Homeland Security. But others think the decision to keep the immigrants isn't doing the country any good.

According to Homeland Security, about 300,000 people have temporary protected status.

The federal government will have to re-evaluate and come up with a new plan before temporary protected status expires.
