Hotel stays for Twins Parks tragedy victims extended to March
The Office of Emergency Management announced that hotel stays have been extended once again for victims of the Twin Parks tragedy.
The fire claimed the lives of 17 Bronx residents, including eight children, and left many families living inside hotels–unable to return home.
Each family currently residing in a hotel will be able to stay there through March 7. Most if not all families are currently placed at hotels in the Bronx including The Alden, The GWB Hotel and the Ramada.
Since the deadly fire on Jan. 9, the city has been working with the families to transfer their Section 8 vouchers and find more permanent housing. This comes as they continue to say that no family will be forced to return to the building even if their apartment is habitable.
New York City’s Emergency Management Department tells News 12 in a statement, "There are at least 59 families that are in emergency hotels, and tenants are being contacted directly to inform them of the extension. Long-term case management services have been identified and established, with agencies and partners working directly with tenants."
News 12 is told those long-term agencies working with the tenants are BronxWorks and CVR.
