The city's Parks Department is looking into a plan to spruce up Van Cortlandt Park and clean up the water in Tibbetts Brook.
Expanding the stream could dilute sewage on its way to the Harlem River, officials say.
At its current width, stormwater quickly overflows into the city's sewage system and pushes wastewater out to the river.
A broader Tibbetts Brook would increase the time it takes runoff to reach the river, thereby giving it more time to dilute.
The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation gave the Parks Department a grant toward funding the project, which could enter the planning phase this summer.
