Nassau officials broke ground Monday on an infrastructure project to fix the intense flooding on Long Beach Road in South Hempstead.
Officials say the persistent flooding in the area not only causes congestion and road closures but also dangerous driving conditions.
"This isn't just about inconvenience -- ponding poses a serious risk to drivers and to their cars," says Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. "As little as a foot of water can move a car off the road."
The initial phase of the infrastructure project is estimated to cost $400,000.
The project, which will include drainage improvements and pavement repairs and replacements, is set to be completed this fall.
