As the summer approaches, residents throughout the city will soon be hearing the sound of cicadas.
The loud shrill sound that people find annoying is actually a love song, say entomologists. Every summer, the insects return to the Northeast and within a few weeks, they sing, mate and die. According to entomologists, the next phase occurs when their eggs hatch in trees, fall to the ground and feed on the roots of the trees for the next 17 years.
The cicadas aren?t a threat to people since they don?t bite or sting. The next time this cycle occurs will be in 2025.
