Families with children born prematurely took to the street of Morris Park Sunday morning to celebrate Neonatal Intensive Care Awareness Month.
The families took part in Montefiore Hospital's annual "Babies on the Run" fundraiser walk. The hospital's perinatal center is the only NICU facility of its kind in the region.
The goal of Sunday's event was to raise money for high-tech cameras called NICView, so mothers can see and bond with their babies using their smartphones once they've gone home from the hospital.
Montefiore NICU nurses say even just one or two of the $20,000 cameras would make a world of a difference in care.
The walk also provided Montefiore's NICU families the chance to reconnect with the nurses and staff who provided around-the-clock care for their infants inside the NICU.
With 35 cribs inside, nurses say they are always over capacity and need all the help they can get.
