A march against gun violence happened in Harlem Friday in the aftermath of recent mass shootings across the nation.
Elected officials and neighborhood residents came out to show their support for a ban on assault weapons and said a lot of work is left to be done.
As a result, the age to purchase a gun throughout the state will raise from 18 to 21. There will also be a new task force on social media and violent extremism.
Another bill will make it unlawful to purchase or sell body armor for anyone not engaged in professions that require one, such as police officers.
Elected officials at the march said additional action needs to be taken.
Council Member Shaun Abreau said more investment is needed in after-school and youth programs, while Rep. Adriano Espaillat said there should be a strong focus on illegal guns in the community.
Meantime, the Manhattan DA's Office announced new initiatives that will support community-based organizations working to address gun violence prevention.
