City residents can now download an app that will help keep them informed about any emergencies that could impact them.

The Notify NYC app helps New Yorkers stay informed faster than ever before with a new location-based feature. The app is free to download and covers everything from hurricanes to traffic issues and school closings.

"When you sign up for Notify NYC and download this app, we can actually find out where your device is at a particular time and send you a message that is appropriate for that area," says Emergency Management Commissioner Joe Esposito. "If there is an accident in that area, if there is a water main break, it'll know where your device is."

Notify NYC launched 10 years ago and more than 500,000 New Yorkers take advantage of its emergency notifications.
