Applications are now open for the storefront improvement grant that will give qualifying businesses near Yankee Stadium up to $1 million for renovations.
The stadium draws in upward of 3 million visitors each year.
One of those businesses is The Dug Out, which Sheila Smith operates. The sports bar has been a staple in the neighborhood for more than two decades. Smith says this grant could help with some cosmetic upgrades.
"Redoing the front of the bar, so when I open the door, people are excited to come in, since it's been here for so many years. It's looked the same for so many years. I want to brighten that up and let people know, 'Yes The Dugout is still here, but it's improved," Smith said.
Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson came out Saturday to speak with Smith on the needs of small business owners.
"We cannot say that businesses are the anchor and the foundation of our community in our city if we do nothing to support them," Gibson said.
The state funded the $1 million grant. Gibson said they are working to tap into more money to enhance small businesses in the Bronx.
"When you talk about building generational wealth and economic wealth and power in the Bronx, it is through the lense of economic development and small business," she said.
