Welcome back to Ask the Borough President here on News 12 The Bronx with Bronx BP Vanessa Gibson, ready to get to some of our callers this evening? Let's kick things off with Andrew who's dialed in from High Bridge. Andrew, thanks so much for your call here on Ask the BP and what's your question tonight for the borough president? Hey, good evening, BP Gibson. How are you? Good, good, good. Thanks for calling. We, we spoke about this several times. I'm calling from Highbridge again. The parking walls have, yes, ma'am, has increased dramatically. Ogden University, Miriam Avenue. Again, we were out there for that beautiful gala that you attended, that grand opening for Bosco Bosco Bell Park. They parked the cars on the sidewalk. They parked laterally on the sidewalk or up and down Ogden, valet parking cones. It has not stopped. And on the behind the bus stop, you know, the enforcement has not been progressive, you know, or consistent. It's skittish, and I mean it has really, really ramped up. We, I've watched 4 buses disembark. Because they cannot get up Ogden Avenue going southbound because it becomes a one way street. Yeah Andrew, thanks so much for bringing that concern to our attention. Yeah, we, we've consistently been talking about this all over the borough, but certainly in this area of Highbridge on Ogden Avenue, uh, the beautiful park we opened at Boscobel Beautiful. There's a new housing development that's going up at the old Ogden Theater, uh, and then there's also a nightclub and a restaurant and they have valet parking, uh, it's a lot. Not going on on that stretch from 170th down to university, uh, we do have a new commanding officer at the 44th precinct, uh, but as you all know, when it comes to enforcement and double parked vehicles and other traffic enforcement actions, it's under traffic and not the local precinct so we can have a conversation with the borough's traffic enforcement and and really pinpoint this area once again I think a lot of times it comes down to the resources. Because if we put a lot of resources in one area and then there's another priority they get moved. I mean, you know that ebb and flow happens a lot with traffic and with NYPD, but it's certainly concerning. It is a hazard when it comes to pedestrians and just walkways, so that is something we'll, you know, bring it back up to the 44th and to Bronx traffic as well. And then you mentioned also that there was more housing that's being developed in that area as well, likely to bring some more cars with it, any plans. To mitigate that with maybe a new parking lot or any other options in the neighborhood. Oh, I wish in this environment we don't build parking lots anymore. Uh, it's a challenge we've lost a lot of parking to housing and new development because we need housing. I get it. There's a balance and in this society we're really trying to get out of the car culture phenomenon, so to speak, where we're trying to encourage different modes of transportation, albeit, you know, our. This, uh, the Metro North station's coming, uh, making sure that our buses are moving through the borough, more dedicated bus lanes. We're trying to do that across the borough, but as you know there are many areas that are transit deserts and so you have to get around by vehicle, um, and so we're trying to make the mass transit system better, uh, and more amenable and affordable to commuters and making sure that you don't have to drive your car at all or less, uh, so that's a work in progress. But usually a lot of the housing we don't get the parking sometimes it's in indoors it's underground, but it's usually a garage, right? It depends on the financing of the project. Speaking of alternative modes of transportation, this big news last week with congestion pricing, will it continue? Will it not? The president moving to stop the toll in its tracks, so to speak, but the governor says she's gonna keep the cameras on. What do you think of the back and forth on the toll and what do you think the ultimate outcome will be? Well, as you know, there's litigation, the MTA did sue the federal government, the US Department of Transportation under the Trump administration made this decision to rescind on the USDOT's approval of congestion pricing that was made under the Biden administration. Now regardless of how you feel about congestion pricing, whether you're for or against it, I think it's really reckless and irresponsible of the president to just rescind on a decision made. For his own reasons or their own reasons without any revenue opportunities for the MTA, right? Let's be very clear, the $15 billion in revenue that was projected through congestion pricing is going to modernize our subway system that everyone complains about. It's going to accelerate ADA accessibility at subway stations including Park Chester and many others in the Bronx. It is going to electrify our buses in the borough since we have some of the highest rates of asthma. Uh, we're looking at a new Bronx asthma center in the South Bronx. All of that is projected based on revenue, right? So to make this decision and to halt the program without any way to get new revenue from the federal government is irresponsible, right? Um, and I know there's a lot of mixed opinions, but we've already seen a reduction. Um, by a lot in terms of the less vehicles that are coming into the CBD and so that means that you know ultimately congestion pricing is working now. I understand as an out of borough if you're reducing traffic in the CBD that means that traffic if they're still driving is going somewhere else and so yes, New Yorkers are commuters, we always find alternatives. So if you tell me I can't go into this area because I have to pay, I will find a freeway. I got it. I understand, um, but the goal is is to generate the revenue that we need for the MTA so that we can really get a lot of these capital projects up and running and accelerate them and should congestion pricing ultimately be taken off the table following this litigation, one of the big transportation projects that we're looking forward to here in the Bronx are these new Metro North stations. Are those put in jeopardy at all? So there's a possibility. I mean we have been working towards the 3. $2 billion we have the support of our US senators, our congress members. The governor just made an announcement today that we're looking at, you know, electrifying our Metro North station, so that's good, but everything has a cost, and I understand we don't want to be punitive, but we recognize that we have to do something to reduce congestion. Our streets are flooded and we have to do something about it and at the expense of our children and families that are living with. Asthma and so many other health disparities that are preventable, I think this is the way to go, and I think we should allow more time to see the real impact before we just do a knee jerk reaction with the new administration, um, just halting this program again without any revenue it would be a difference if there was a check that came behind it, but there's no money. Yeah, time will tell what is that future is right, stay with us here on Ask the Borough President. We're getting to more of your calls right after this.

Welcome back to Ask the borough president here on News 12 with Bronx VP Vanessa Gibson. Hard to believe that we're already wrapping up February this year is flying by, yeah, sure, but let me tell you, it was definitely quite the month. But that aside, this brings us to our health tip this evening. And what are we looking at for the month of February? OK, I know this applies to many people, yeah, including me. March is National Sleep Awareness Month, and we are encouraging our Bronx sites to get enough sleep to reduce. Insomnia, anyone that may have a sleeping disorder or simply because you're keeping late hours like me, uh, chronic poor sleep may increase your likelihood of developing, uh, dementia, heart disease, obesity, and even cancers and so we are encouraging everyone to try to get as much sleep as you can. We used to say 8 hours of sleep, but many of us try and we're striving to get to 8 hours. So please set aside a time. My staff always tells me, put aside the electronics. And get rest. I was gonna say that to everyone. It comes down to putting the phone on the nightstand, not letting it serve as a distraction, but really prioritizing your health overall, and it starts with sleep on a little bit of a lighter note, as of yesterday we wrapped up Savor the Bronx Restaurant Week, which was back for the first time since the pandemic so reflect a little bit on how that went and uh how many restaurants were participating and just to be able to bring it back after the Bronx was excellent. 71 restaurants, the highest ever, and we launched it at Suyo Gastro fusion in the Bronx, and we were highlighting just the cultural diversity, beautiful foods, different cuisines, uh, from our African businesses to our soul food, Caribbean food, uh, Italian food, Greek food, uh, Spanish food. It's beautiful, uh, and over the course of these last several days it started on Tuesday, the 18th, and it ended on Sunday. We just really just visited restaurants. We visited uh Porto Salvo we visited Eleanor's bar and kitchen in Pelham Bay, and we just really talked about like what we can do to support small businesses. They're doing great things. A lot of them are family owned and, you know, just oriented generational businesses, and we just wanna highlight the borough as a place of tourism for visitors, for new residents, and for longtime residents. Take advantage, shop local but eat local as well. Saor the Bronx 2025 restaurant week. Just such a beautiful reminder of all of the diversity that exists here in the borough. I know it just wrapped up, but looking ahead to 2026, plans to bring it back once again hopefully Bronx Tourism Council and BXCDC. We work with the New York State Latino Restaurants Association and the New York City Hospitality Alliance. Uh, we definitely are looking to make it bigger and better each year. Thanks so much for joining us here on Ask the Borough President on News 12 with Bronx BP Vanessa Gibson already touched on a variety of issues this evening. We have more callers on the line. So let's get to Denise who's dialed in from Co op City this evening. Denise, thanks so much for your call and what's your question for the borough president? Hello. Hi, how are you? Hi, good evening. Yes, good evening. Hi, Ms. Gibson. My question for you is, have you considered running for mayor this election? I think you would be an excellent candidate considering how much you care about the issues in our borough. You seem to have Denise's endorsement for higher office. Thank you so much. I appreciate that. I have heard that uh quite a bit traveling across the borough, but I am so focused on serving as borough president because we have a lot of work to do. I. Started a lot of projects, capital, uh, and program, and I wanna make sure I see them to fruition like the Bronx Steam Center, the Kingsbridge Armory, the Metro North, Orchard Beach, uh, the work at Hunts Point. Uh, we have a lot more work to do, so I am staying where I am, but I'm so grateful to serve the residents of the Bronx. Quite a list of projects to look at um we have a lot more, yeah, what would be some of the bigger priorities of a second term as Bronx Bage? Sure maternal health is a big deal. For me and we're building out a birthing center. We had one back in the 80s on the Morris Heights and it's since closed. We only have three in New York State, Bronx Stein, the science, technology, engineering, architecture and math and focusing on health care, life sciences and research partnerships with Mercy University Montefio Einstein, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, just great pipeline careers for young people, but also focusing on CTE and apprenticeship opportunities, building. Out the construction building trades industry for the next generation of workers, um, and seeing the reimagination of the Kingsbridge Armory like that has to happen while we're still around it's important to make sure that that development is built into a beacon of opportunity of economic growth of generational wealth of small business support of recreation and and community space. um Orchard Beach, we are completing phase 1 $100 million. Transforming the pavilion so we have phase two that we're now starting on likely another 100 million, but that's important for us for our borough. um, I'm focusing really heavily on open spaces in our parks. I want a minimum of 1% out of the city's budget dedicated to parks. I wanna see vital parks initiatives. I wanna see more lifeguards, more swimming classes. I wanna open up all of our swimming pools at our high schools. Many have opened like the one at DeWitt Clinton and Truman. But we still have more to go. We're doing a lot in the education realm, uh, really supporting our young people and looking at more opportunities for MBK and MSK and we just have a lot of work to do, so I am happy and content with being where I am and I feel like this is my assignment and my purpose to serve the residents and families of our great borough. When you talk about opportunities here in the borough, your office just kicked off, um, really a whole load of opportunities. And providing them for um Bronx sites in this future forward Bronx initiative that just kicked off last week. This is a series of jobs fairs that are gonna be happening at Bronxboro Borough Hall rather in partnership with the state. Can you elaborate a little bit more on what types of positions are going to be available and how Bronx sites can access one of those job fairs so everyone can always follow us on social media. Uh, we get sent emails out on Tuesdays to our office and we also. Using a lot of different modes of communication, but this initiative is with the Department of Labor which we have two staff in our office, and we've been very intentional about attracting, uh, applicants and connecting them to jobs whether it's health care, social services, administrative we've been looking at construction we've been looking at supporting veterans, people with disabilities, the LGBTQIA plus community is important. We have some of the highest unemployment rates among African American men. Uh, for many reasons, so we are also targeting, uh, African American men when it comes to connecting them to jobs. So over the next course of several months to the end of the year we have job fairs that are all tailored for veterans, for the African community, for the LGBT community, people with disabilities, and we're focused on subject areas education, health, uh, life sciences we're gonna do a job fair with the NYPD. because we don't have enough officers that are joining the department to become cops in the first place, so we want to lift up these industries because they're very important for us, and I want to get our unemployment rate down during the pandemic we were at 26.6% and now we're at 6.6%, but we're still the highest of the five boroughs and I'm a competitive borough president, so I wanna make sure that I get my numbers down compared to the other boroughs. So it's important for me. To not only connect applicants and residents with jobs but career pathways that matters to me because when you give someone a job you transform their life and I believe in that work and that's why we work with inclusive employers we've had job fairs at Borough Whore where employers were hiring on the spot awesome. We had one with Krispy Kreme a few months ago. 618 people showed up and I'm pretty sure some of them were not from the Bronx and that's OK. OK because we extend ourselves, but this is all about supporting the Bronx and uplifting our individuals and making sure the applicants are really connected to those jobs and time and time again I feel like I always come back to this idea of access, but placing it at a one stop shop makes all the difference so definitely things to keep an eye out for in the months to come. Let's get to some more callers this evening. I think Deborah is dialed in from Castle Hill. Deborah, thanks so much for your call and what's your question for the VP tonight? Yes, uh, Miss Gibson. Hi, good evening. I have a serious concern about my area in the Bronx, and it's a very, it's a bad eyesore. We have a lot of graffiti. That is, that is on the apartment buildings and the storefronts and on the highways like the Bruckner and on across the Bronx, you know, and it's, it's just an eyesore coming into the Bronx to see this, and I lived in the Bronx over 50 years and I lived in this area over 25 years and since 2020, I've never seen such a high, high value. Of graffiti on the walls and all, it's just, it's embarrassing to the Bronx. Mm. A valid concern and uh one that hopefully can be addressed but also not just addressed in the immediate but how do we prevent this from happening on a recurring basis once it is dealt with well we believe in public artwork and I support many of our independent artists. I support murals. I've done that over my years, but I think sometimes there's a difference between artwork and graffiti and knowing that there are graffiti artists, I understand, but there's tagging, there's lots of. Things that happened I think we have to make that distinction when it becomes an eyesore in an area where you know we're seeing too much of it so just to understand like how it works, graffiti NYC is a program through the city and we usually call them and let them know about an area of concern when someone calls our office but if it's a private building, we have to get the approval of the landlord if it's a small business we have to get the approval of the business owner we can't just go in and remove the graffiti. Their buildings, but when it comes to highways, yes, we absolutely can because that's usually city DOT or state DOT or Metro North or MTA depends right underpass, overpass, DOT, etc. etc. um, and so with that particular area we definitely will look closely at a community board 9 I'm certain in Castle Hill, um, and then definitely work with the caller offline on those specific areas, but I just encourage anyone, um, this is where we do beautification. Projects when the weather is better though it's too cold outside uh we do beautification projects where we bring students together and we bring community groups and schools and we do beautification artwork uh and we remove graffiti. I love removing graffiti. I want that machine. It's like a power wash machine and I really, I told my staff like I don't mind. I will come out. I'll be on White Plains Road, Pelham Park, wherever, and I will do it literally because to me it's, it's ref. Rushing to know that we are beautifying the community and every community should look beautiful like that and again I get it there's a separation between artwork and what some of us define as graffiti where it's too much um and so I wanna make sure that we address that where we can, but as I said, if it's a private property we do have to get the approval and then sometimes we run into the properties that are vacant and so that's hard because you have to usually find whoever the property owner is, but it's absolutely do. It's not impossible and we've done that before. Yeah, it comes down to having pride in your community, especially when you put the effort in to keep it clean. You touched on private property, um, an area where some private properties are experiencing issues over the last few days is Eastchester Gardens. There's a water main break there that has resulted in no heat or hot water for several residents. What's the latest on that situation and what support is being offered to those impacted by that? So this happened last week. There was a water main break. And because of the damage underground, it, it hit some of the gas lines and so as a result, the residents of East Chester Gardens, which is a niche development, and some of the homeowners along Burke Avenue and others were impacted with no cooking gas and no water at all since that time you will see Con Edison is on site. Emergency management is also on site and they've been doing a lot of work, a couple of things identifying the. Source of the leak stopping the leak, making sure that the water main break is repaired that takes time, right? But what many don't understand is when with gas restoration you have to access each individual apartment and or home, right? And so we can't just do it from a master meter system it has to be individually done. Uh, many, many customers have been restored. They do have water, but now we're learning some don't have hot water. So I wanna shout out ICNA Relief on Burke Avenue, uh, that does have a location right across the street from where it happened that was not impacted, and they are looking to do support to provide, you know, bottles of water for any resident or family that's impacted, but we are definitely trying almost 1100 customers and several 100 have already been restored, um, and so there's more to come if you live in that area you are impacted, please call our office. It's 718-590-3,500 so that we can help you but again landlords are usually required to provide some sort of, you know, uh, just provisions to help when it comes to water when it comes to no cooking gas, things of that nature so it's been a challenge, but we're working through the system as fast and expeditiously as we can right, hopefully sooner rather than later, absolutely we'll be right back here on Ask the Borough President. We have been getting to a whole lot of topics of conversation tonight, and I think we're gonna get to another caller right now. We have Naya who has dialed in from Gun Hill Road this evening. Naya, go ahead and ask your question for the borough president. I just want to say I think you're doing an amazing job. I've had the pleasure of meeting you in Gun Hill Projects at a couple of events. Um, I'm currently an educator and I'm in Harlem, but I actually have to go through the hub in the Bronx, and I noticed there's like a big open air drug market in that area. What is being done to improve that? Because there's so many great things that's coming up, commercial businesses, and it looks great, but then you're like stepping over. People that are like making the quality of life really hard. What is being done to help those people and because of course they need to help. What is being done to help those people and make the neighborhood better for others that have to cross through and go through that area. Yeah, Naya, thanks so much for bringing that to our attention because this is a question that we get often about the hub and how else to mitigate some of the issues that we're seeing go on there and the quality of life issues for sure. So as you know we joined Mayor Adams and elected officials last week for the Community link initiative. Which is uh interagency collaboration that will add enhanced sanitation services, trash pick up, but the challenge we have is it's a transportation hub. There's a saturation of existing drug treatment harm reduction programs, so we announced recovering together because we believe that a drop in center would actually help centralize all of those services in one location, um, because the challenge is it's a vulnerable population and people come to that area to. Prey on the clients that are there. There are many clients that are unsheltered that are living with substance abuse and need drug treatment programs that's the reality but I think when you have all of that contained together it just becomes a problem. Soun link and what our hope is is to really bring everyone together to make sure that all agencies are working together sanitation, the parks department, DOT, the mayor's office, the health department, uh, all of the organ. organizations that serve our area we're also looking to build out a bridge clinic at Lincoln Hospital, a $6 million commitment that will centralize all of their services that are scattered today and centralize them in Lincoln Hospital because we want to look at emergency room referrals we wanna look at group sessions we wanna look at wrap around services and treatment because we know that this is a population that needs help. It, it's not a crime to have an addiction, but we need to help clients so that we. Don't see the needles and the syringes all over the place, right? And it's not acceptable to see the conditions of the hub. It's gotten out of control. It is a state of emergency so I'm glad that it's on the radar of City Hall and we've asked the mayor multiple times to give us the support and the resources and so my goal is to work with all the elected officials and the administration to see this community link initiative through and to ensure that we really get the uh. Attention that we deserve and we see the results that we really need and then alongside that community link initiative that is now being moved forward you're talking about the recovering Together initiative that your office is spearheaded what's the path forward for that look like to the point where we actually see that drop in center become reality, right? So in addition to the drop-in center, we're also delivering money through the BXCDC, our economic development arm, and we're working with the state and we're looking at about $600,000 that will go to the 3rd Avenue. Business improvement district with Pedro Suarez and his team and it's going to provide enhanced lighting security measures it's gonna provide beautification projects it's going to really look at supporting the small businesses in the area uh that have had to see these conditions and still survive as a business. That's not acceptable. It is expense money that will also help support the Third Avenue bid. Uh, they have ambassadors that go out and do clean up every single day. There are Clemente. Plaza they're on 3rd Avenue. They're on Melrose. They're on 149 and we wanna enhance that and add more staff to Pedro's team so that he has the support that he really needs, um, and we also are embarking on naloxone training because it's been proven to prevent an overdose death and shout out to Pedro Suarez and Jay Medina who used to work at Third Avenue. He's now at Southern Boulevard. They literally have stopped dozens of overdose deaths because of naloxone, so we want. To expand on the trainings so that everyone can have training on naloxone. Yeah, I think even when our crews have been out with them on the ground we've seen that work that action and it's incredible life we're saving lives here. People should not die in our streets because we don't help them. That's not acceptable to us and we can't let that happen to our own people. Someone's child, someone's relative, someone's parent is, is strung out and living with an addiction and they need help and so we can't. And a blind eye to this, the conditions you see in the hub is a call to action and attention, and it's a state of emergency, which is why so many have their eyes on it and they're looking for a path forwards. I've met you on several occasions. How are you doing this evening? How you doing? I'm good, Derek. Thank you for calling tonight. Derek, we want to make sure she has enough time to respond. Yes, well, I'm calling in regards to the other movie theater that closed here in uh Concourse Plaza. What is being done to reopen that? And, uh, my other question is how is your office assisting us with our plaza that has been in disarray for some time now? And thank you. Derek, thanks so much. Some plans on the, uh, much awaited what's gonna happen with the movie theater and overall the plaza, how to redevelop that plaza before he's the biggest fan of movie theaters. I appreciate you, Derek. So there is going to be an announcement very soon. I'm very, very proud. The landlord of the Concourse Plaza 161st Street Mall, um, heard a. Lot of concern once the old movie theater closed. Remember it closed in Bronx and in Queens all the New York City locations closed, so it wasn't just the Bronx, and we're left with the mall and the movie theater at Bay Plaza. So there will be an announcement very soon and I'm absolutely certain that the owners were able to work with another movie company to bring back a movie theater but we also have to. Remember why movie theaters are closing across the country because there there's no appetite. It's not as attractive as it used to be it's not family oriented like it used to be. We have to get back to that, right? We have to make sure that we have more family visits. We use our movie theaters. I know everyone's streams but we also have to support our movie you ask, we must support. Stay with us. We'll be right back.

Can't believe I'm saying that we're looking ahead to March, but we are there. We've got a lot of events going on in the borough. Yes, we do we're always busy. Can you walk us through some of we're looking for the next few weeks this Wednesday, February 26th at Eastwood Manor at 6 p.m. we're hosting our celebration of Black History Month, 3371 East Chester Road on Wednesday, March 12th, we have our higher education. College Fair 10 a.m. at Mercy University at 1200 Waters Place. Then we are having a Women's History Month fellowship breakfast Thursday, March 13th at 11 a.m. at Borough Hall 851 Grand Concourse. Saturday, March 15th, we're celebrating Irish Heritage Month 40 p.m. at Wicked Wolf at 4029 East Tremont Avenue in Throgs Neck. Our annual State of the Borough address is here Thursday, March 20th. 6 p.m. at Lehman College in Lovinger Theater. Then we're celebrating our iftar event in recognition of Ramadan on Thursday, March 27th at 6 p.m. at Bronx Borough Hall, 851 Grand Concourse. On Tuesday, April 1st, we're having our African Community Resource Fair at 11 a.m. also Bronx Borough Hall at 851 Grand Concourse. We also have a 2025 borough cultural grant in collaboration with New York City Tourism Foundation. The The portal is open. The applications are due March 3rd if you are interested in a small cultural grant from our office, and I also want to remind everyone that community board applications are open. We're the only borough who has our application. It's online and it's in a second language, and the applications are due Sunday, March 9th. If you want to join any of your local community board, uh, all 12, we are looking for new talent, new opportunities, and fresh faces to. Add to our community boards. thank you community board members and for all of those callers who call in with concerns, this is a great way to get involved in your community really grassroots on the ground and be able to lend your voice to those conversations that happen as well. A lot of cultural celebrations in the month to come. You just wrapped up Dominican Heritage Month here in the Bronx. We were there. Talk to me a little bit about that celebration and being able to get the community together for that. So it was last Thursday. The weather wasn't the greatest, but we had a celebration. Dominican Heritage Month. Look at that. Look at all of our flags. We had the consul general there. We honored so many of our incredible Dominican leaders, including Veronica Rosario, uh, from PIX 11. We also had the Lajada Junior youth band from NYPD Options. These young people can sing, and it was a great event.ue vivaladi pulga Dominicana.
