All right, welcome back to News 12 of the Bronx. This is ask the borough president, borough President Vanessa Gibson here joining us, she's here for the hour and we've got some calls already coming in. Borough president first. We're gonna go to Foster in soundview, talking about a dangerous intersection. Foster. You're talking to the borough president. Hi, how are you? Good, good evening. Question for you between Sty Avenue and Lafayette Avenue. Um Boynton Avenue is in between both of those. They decided to make it a one way street. It has been two way street for years, but since they decided to make it into a one way street at the corner of Lafayette in Boynton, there is no traffic lights and there is no stop sign on the Lafayette side, which means the cars do not stop. And when you are driving or let's say when I'm driving and I wanna make a left or a right turn. It's hard for me to see if there are any cars coming because you have the cars blocking the view and you got the trees blocking the view. The other issue with that is, is that we have a lot of seniors who live in Lafayette State who use Sound View Park and the Children who use Sound View park and trying to cross that street is dangerous. I know the area. She said Lafayette States. So what's the procedure yet? I mean, I'm sure this happens often. It happens a lot and, and that's why we appreciate feedback from residents because they are the greatest because you see this every day at a dangerous intersection that does not have a speed reducer or all point stop sign or a traffic light. We will go through the process and make a request to Department of Transportation. We can involve community board nine and talk to the Transportation Committee. We can do official request dot Will come out do an assessment. They look at peak off peak hours, weekday weekend, they look at traffic volume and then they'll be able to make a determination if a traffic calming measure is warranted and they usually send us a letter several weeks after and then they'll let us know it's approved or not. And then usually it's approved. Uh We've been doing really good with dot And then they'll let us know an installation date and they will inform the person that requested the community board and then we'll actually work towards that installation. So that's the process. Sometimes it can take a little longer, but we'll work with dot To Expedite as quickly as we can because there's also a neighboring school there. Lafayette states the mall on Bruckner, there's a lot in the area and certainly I know traffic patterns from two way to one way. Sometimes it needs more traffic, more cars, more double parking, but you also have pedestrians, especially older adults and with mobility issues. So we will work and talk offline. We'll make the request to dot We'll work with the community board and see if we can get that approved. They said it takes some time. We're talking months, a couple of weeks, weeks. Not that long. Ok. Very good. All right, we'll put it in this one. another caller we have Todd is in Mott Haven and, and, uh, wants to talk to the borough president. Uh, Todd. You're talking right now to the borough president. Hi. Can you hear me? Yes, we can hear you. Ok. Great, great. First of all, I want to thank you for your services. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for helping the Bronx out for your services. Thank you. And also I wanna thank you for, um, the pavement of these streets around my area which is in my Haven because under the form of DP uh Ruben Diaz for like 10 years, I was calling and calling trying to get these streets paved and it seems like on your watch, it just happened. I don't know if it just happened to happen on your watch or maybe you just had something to do with it. But, but from 1 49th street, from on from Southern Boulevard down to Third Avenue, nice and smooth bike lanes, bus lanes, pavement, nice and smooth as well as on uh Westchester Avenue. From Southern Boulevard to Trinity Avenue. Beautiful. But my real question I wanted to ask you, are there any special regulations on these E bikes that's just appearing all over the places on one way street, sidewalk? Anything happening with that? That's a great question. I get that. Well, first let me acknowledge the, the Diaz administration but also the community Board committee board, one and two the council members as well as dot our borough commissioner Anthony Perez. We sent a lot of requests over when it comes to street repaving, resurfacing, fixing potholes, making sure the streets are safe for pedestrians, for cyclists and everyone right shared streets. So that's one. Secondly, the E bike and echo to regulation Mayor Eric Adams dot A lot of work around regulations about creating balance in the system, making sure that everyone is held accountable. Uh We're seeing a lot more E bikes and E scooters on our streets. Many of our delivery workers use them as a mode of transportation to get to and from work. So that's an important component. We're trying to regulate, you know, the, the storage of the E uh bikes and the lithium batteries which have been the cause of so many fatal fires in the city. Residential and commercial. So we're doing that. We're working with members of Congress. Shout out to Congressman Richie Torres, they just got his passed in the house. So a lot of things are happening at every level. But locally speaking, we're trying to gear up for the summer season and put more measures in place. Working with the council, working with dot And working with the administration creating a system. Uh The mayor announced in his state of the city address earlier this year that they're creating like a city agency that's going to oversee uh E bikes and e scooters in terms of regulation in terms of where they can go. But everyone has to follow the rules and any time people don't follow the rules, it just makes it bad for everyone, right? Uh And I've seen them on sidewalks with Children and babies that's not acceptable. You know, we have to make sure that we create the spaces for them and they have to follow the rules. So a lot of this is about education, it's about outreach and it's about what we can do to make sure that everyone is safe. It was one of the topics we were hoping to discuss with you actually, that the E bike battery bill and the new safety standards on those lithium ion batteries in the Bronx. We know we've seen plenty of these fires happen already. Is this gonna be enough? I think it's a start, I think it takes us a step in the right direction. But obviously, we need to make sure that we hold the manufacturers accountable. It's easy to go on Amazon and a lot of these apps and buy a lithium battery. So a lot of this is really about education. I have been asked by many residents to have them banned in nature in other places. And we don't wanna ban, we don't wanna be punitive but we want people to be safe. So the city started up pilot on storage facilities in parts of the city where you can go and safely store your E bike at a time because again, it's a safety issue. You can't bring it at home. You can't put it in your building and you're elevated in your hallway. There's a lot of things that are happening. So we're on the right path. We're just not there yet. We're back here on news 12 with borough president Vanessa Gibson for ask the borough president and it's time for our health tip of the month. And the borough president is talking about uh another month uh in June rather, where we're gonna be looking at Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month, right? That's right. June is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month. Alzheimer's disease is most common form of dementia and it affects parts of your brain to control your memory, your thought and language. Sadly, there is no cure but experts believe that lowering your blood pressure, exercising healthy lifestyles and not smoking can reduce the risk. Early detection is key and may help slow the progression. And for patients that are ages 65 and older, are asking for a cognitive screening at your annual health and wellness visits are really good as well. So we'll do more to amplify that. Share information CB OS that are doing this work during the month of June. I I know a lot of these uh health and wellness kind of events around the borough will offer free screening a good opportunity. I'm sure it's gonna be happening uh during the month of June here in the Bronx. Uh, but just the, the, the message largely at least is and I don't want to speak for you borough president, but people just need to be aware of this and maybe get checked out before. I think early detection is always important and working with your primary care physician going to the doctor regularly. I mean, it's something that we are not always accustomed to doing, but whether you are insured or not, we have lots of city programs, Medicaid, Medicare, lots of ways that you can get access to a primary care doctor and just overall primary care in general. But it's really important to many of our residents live with heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, uh, cholesterol asthma and a lot of these are preventable diseases. So we encourage you not just during the month of June, do it all year round, but if you can, especially during the month of June, check on your older adults, your parents, grandparents and make sure they get, uh, tested in early screening. We did have one Facebook question that we wanted to get to from a user reveal Bell who asks, why does the Bronx not have garbage cans on the corners? I'm guessing they're talking about bigger, you know, uh, just on the sidewalk, on the corner, not a residential place. Just, uh, you know, on the street on the sidewalk. Well, we do have lots of trash receptacles, different kinds uh, I need the location where, uh, the gentleman is asking about because we'll find out if it's residential, commercial or business improvement, commercial district and we'll work with sanitation and the council members, we also fund, uh, trash receptacles. We have some in our parks, open spaces, they're all over, but in some places residential we don't have them and I know we've been getting concerns about that so we'll work on it. One of those things, I guess the more, the better, the more, the better, I agree. And guess what people have to use them. Right. It reduces littering. Absolutely. All right. All right. Thank you for joining us here on News 12 of the Bronx. We're with borough president Vanessa Gibson for ask the borough president already delved into some issues that, uh, greatly affect the Bronx sites. We got a couple more callers to talk to the borough president right now and we're gonna start with sister Patricia who's in Wakefield, uh, talking about an empty lot there. Uh, Sister Patricia, you're talking to the borough president right now. Thank you. Hello, President Gibson. Thank you. Good evening. One. Great. Thank you for all you do for the Bronx to try to keep improving it. Um, I lived in the Bronx 27 years. I moved away for 12 and I'm back now. 2.5. And I'm saddened by all the trade, I see around the Bronx, but in particular on the corner of the, the southwest corner of 240th Street and Richardson Avenue, there is an empty lot that was surrounded by a fence, a wooden fence that's completely rotting and people just keep throwing their trash and it just keeps building up and it sort of spreads down the block because I guess people just give up. And I'm just wondering, I've, I've written to the bank that owns it. It's the melon bank. I've written to some representatives in office and it just doesn't seem to help and I'm wondering if, uh, you or your staff can look into this. That's beautiful that, you know, who owns it? Thank you. That was my first question. Who owns the lot because we can go after the owner. It's privately owned by a bank. I'm sure there's very little oversight when it comes to the maintenance of it. The wooden fence that you're saying is now in poor condition has caused even more people to illegally dump. Um And so it's probably again in very, very poor condition, we will reach out to the bank work with the local community board. Obviously, we can work with sanitation to the extent where we can go in because it's private lot. So there are some limitations where sanitation cannot go in, but the perimeter outside belongs to us a city street. Um And so there are some things we can do, but I also wanna figure out a long term plan. We have a lot of vacant property in this borough that's privately owned by banks in foreclosure, lots of other people and they're not being developed. I'm not saying I wanna develop all but I want them to be maintained. I don't want them to be, you know, sites of excessive trash and illegal dumping. That's not acceptable. And so we will reach out, we'll find out who the bank is the point person and we'll work with the community board and really find out if they can maintain it because at times, uh, many of the owners don't live here, they're not around, they don't check on their property. And so it's, it's cause for concern because that issue will exacerbate even further if there's really no oversight and no monitoring seems like trash is an issue that's affecting Bronx. We've been talking about it quite often here on the show. Now, the containerization that we, we discussed uh kind of, yeah. Uh uh I in, in the future, I guess we're, we're moving more in that direction. Is that a solution perhaps to some of these problems, especially the one that Sister Patricia was just talking about. I think we're moving in that direction. It's a combination of things, the additional trash receptacles, the education and the outreach. Uh making sure we have proper signage and people are not illegally dumping. We have enforcement overnight through DS NY because we wanna make sure that people don't go into neighborhoods from other neighborhoods and illegally dumped that's not acceptable. Um But we also have to make sure that private landlords as well as city agencies that own property are held accountable. Everyone has to, our neighborhoods are beautiful and we wanna make sure they're maintained. There should be no reason why people are calling about excessive trash on the streets. People need to move their cars for street cleaning rules so that the streets can be clean and the street sweepers can go through. So there's a lot of those things and everything has to work together. There was a time when we used to have DS Ny produce signs that said no, dumping, curb your door, curb your pet. Right in many of our parks, we have some of the pooper scooper, right? Uh where we encourage people because not all pet owners bring it. So we wanna make sure that they're available in many of our open spaces. So there's a lot that we are doing, but we can do more. I wanna recognize the borough uh Ds Ny staff that does amazing work. We call them a lot. Uh and our city commissioner Jessica Tisch, who oversees all of our city when it comes to Ds Ny and making sure again, I go back to staff, we have to have the staff, staff need to be recognized as an important part of this work because if we're talking about additional pickups, additional street sweeping uh commercial corridors, residential neighborhoods night, which Ds Ny picks up their trash, we have to make sure we have sufficient staff. We can't do it on a bare bones budget, right? So that has to be reflected in every budget we pass and so it's budget season now. So my hope is that sanitation will get a sufficient budget that our borough will get sufficient budget when it comes to staff. But then we also have a lot of clean up efforts. We work with the Yankees every year of the Yankee Foundation and we do a contest over the summer in July and August and we identify neighborhoods that we actually have pickups, we pick up trash, we clean up and then the neighborhood that picks up the most trash is the winner and they get treated to a Yankee game uh, in this, in this, in the fall in September. And it's encouraging, but when you look at the amount of trash, they pick up it like breaks heart when you think about so much trash. So we actually, I have been getting a lot of concerns and we're working and it's not just sanitation, we have operations with step streets with parks with dot There's a lot of, you know, just multi-agency coordinations and that's something we'll continue to do. Ok, let's, uh, let's move along to Maritza Metz. So we appreciate you staying on the line and holding for us, Martz is in Hunts Point. She got a question about boys and girls clubs for the borough president in our borough. Uh, Maritza, you're talking to borough president Gibson right now. Hi, Vanessa Gibson. First of all, I wanna thank you for everything you do in the Bronx. You're amazing. You make women's, oh my God. Your power is so beautiful. I love it. God bless you. But I want to ask the question. I've been, I've been over 40 years in this neighborhood in Hunts Point. Right? And we have, um, these kids now, 10 days these kids nowadays are fighting, you know, you gotta do 1112, 13, smoking and all that. I've been trying to find out with Salamanca, which were Rafael, we threw Rafael. Why can't we have a boys and girls club in Hunts Point? It's so needed in here. So we can say, are you part of green thumb and um New York City Park with my um partner, Juanita Flores. And next to the building I live in which is a, a seven B Brian. I have a garden, we have a garden there that we um putting it beautiful. We let our community come in and all that. But my question to you, how can we, who do we um act to help us get a boys and um club in boys and girls club in Hunts Point? It's a great question. I believe that we need community centers in every neighborhood in the Bronx, right? Number one and every year we're striving, working with elected officials, our community boards, so many of our community leaders and parents, that's why we're working so closely to save uh the S Milo Clubhouse on Ho Avenue that's run by Madison Square Boys and Girls Club. We have pals, we have recreation centers, the Y MC A, we have boys and girls clubs, Mary Mitchell. Shout out to everyone. All of our non for profits that run these amazing programs as well as parks department that runs our rec centers. Kingsbridge Heights Community Center. We have a lot M MC C but it's never enough. A lot of our young people don't feel safe going to other neighborhoods to go to a community center and parents don't feel safe sending their kids. So that's a reality. And we have to change that. We have to make them feel safe. But we also have to put community centers in their own neighborhood, right? A lot of them are run by Dy CD and CB OS. They get funding through contracts. We have to do more. Hunts Point is a great community and we wanna see it grow even more as population grows. But we also need to make sure that we have more programs. So the Hunts Point Recreation Center is great, but it's not enough. And we need to work with district eight, with our superintendent there, with a council member, with all the elected officials. We need to find space. Number one, we need funding number two and that we need a provider to run the center, right? Those are kind of the three components we need, we already have the vision because we know we need it. We have the people, we have our parents, we have kids, we have school groups. So we get, we need the site, we need money and we need a provider. And if we can put all that together in a timely fashion and come up with a really great idea. That's something that we can do. And I wanna recognize community board too and hunts point forward and people like, you know, Maria Torres at Hunts, uh, at the point CDC that are doing great work around building up Hunts point. They're working, uh in the South Bronx with food services, culinary arts programs, job development, job training, all of these things that matter as we move, hunts point forward, moving hunts point forward has to include a community center. So I'm hoping that based on this conversation and also conversations that are already ongoing that we can actually put this plan into reality, good stuff. And, um, let's, let's move right along and we're gonna talk about the, the Bronx Night market actually because that's back at Fordham Plaza, you had to get to that or organizers told us it was made possible in part by your administration, uh, borough president. Why is it so important that you felt like to get this back because it's well attended. It is an incredible opportunity to highlight and showcase small businesses entrepreneurs, Marco Scala does an amazing job with the for night. He's been there for a few years now, but last year, he was having challenges with homelessness with quality of life issues, public safety. It became a real nuisance and it wasn't because of the people. It was because of folks that came in for just negative behavior. So we were able to work with dot with council member Fly with Fordham Road bid with the assembly member, our office and we were able to come up with a real plan. Number one, giving him a real contract with dot to run the Fordham Night market at Fordham Plaza, working with uh different organizations who are responsible for the clean up there, working with community board six. And it really mattered. And so when he premiered in April April 6th, it was huge. And now every month we're gonna be there. And so now we're also working with council member Althea Stevens in the 1 61st street Business Improvement District with Trey Jenkins. And we just did a premiere during Bronx Week uh at the night market on 1 61st street. And that was a big hit too. This year is a little different. Are we tweaking the system a little bit? What, what can people expect when they go? So they can expect uh more food, more vendors, uh more entertainment. You'll see a lot of kids groups performing a lot of independent artists. We're just showcasing Bronx talent, Bronx culture, Bronx diversity, Bronx food, right? All the diverse cultures that we represent and we're putting that all in one space. So the Bronx Night Market is revamped and it's gonna be even better than before Bronx talent. There's a lot of it don't go anywhere. Pastor Borough President. We're continuing with Vanessa Gibson.

All right. Thank you for staying with us here on as the borough president, borough president, Vanessa Gibson generously giving us an hour of her time on this Monday evening here in the borough, we got some calls. We're gonna start with Henry. He's in sound view. He's got a question for the borough president about senior health services. Uh Henry. You're on right now with borough president Gibson. Hello. Hello, Miss Gibson. Hello. Good evening. Congratulations on the great job you've been doing. I've been following you for a minute. Um I'm a local DJ that I've, I've met you several times. You're, you're always all over the place, spreading the good news and information. Um I'm DJ Bax and uh it's a pleasure to talk to you a lot here on April 12. Um ok, Vanessa, where, where do I start? I mean, I'm having an issue with the um health care management for senior citizens. I'm personally experienced. Uh uh It's just like the system is really like so broken. So I was gonna ask you, are there any facilities where we could go and get where a senior citizen can get um, information and help on how to manage their health care better because the healthcare companies and the clinics are not community, you know, communicating with each other. Well, so we, you know, the senior students are stuck in limbo waiting to get a response from the clinic or the healthcare insurance regarding a pending um a referral for, let's say a radiology, you know, there's no help for senior citizens or anywhere for them to go. Luckily, my mom has me managing her health care and I am having such a difficult time because they're both pointing the fingers at each other as to, you know, who did this wrong and who did that wrong. So, are there any agencies that could be a liaison to help uh senior citizens manage their health care on a more personalized level? If you, if I'm making any kind of sense here you are. I think we all struggle with that and it's a challenge the healthcare system is in need of reform from the insurance companies to referral to primary health, to behavioral health. A couple of things I can mention our office, our buns unit uh led by La Senia Walton does amazing work every day. We get a lot of calls so we can actually help any client navigate the system and you know, help with the referral process. Uh We also work with the department for the aging that oversees a lot of our senior programs and older adult centers and nors uh so many seniors are connected to a senior center, Adult Center, a Norc, they're able to get that assistance at the center where there's a social worker on site and they can actually help a clinician, a dietician. Um Obviously, we work closely with health and hospitals as it relates to our three public hospitals and our Gotham Health care centers and then also the Department of Health and mental hygiene. Doh mh has a lot of information. The challenge is how does it get to our communities and our neighborhood and our families? Right? And so we wanna be that connector. So we will follow up with you offline so that you can get the services for your mom. But I think generally speaking, that's something that we do all the time. Our health unit will always looking at advisory boards and working groups because we always wanna get health care providers together to talk about challenges in the system. We just recognized national Nurses week last week. So let me respect and recognize all of our nurses out there. Thank you so much for all your work and service. And really at the end of the day, we have to do better. We have to get education um out, we have to get information out. So that's something that we're always looking to do because it's unacceptable that you feel like you have to like go through a revolving bureaucrat like red tape and just get referral and go here and go there. There should be honestly one place where you get everything, all services that can be centralized. We're not there yet. It's complicated stuff. Very complicated. Imagine if you don't speak the language or if you're undocumented, like, and that's a lot of challenges that people go through. So we have to fix that. Ok. We're gonna move on to Manuel, who's in Claremont. He's got a question for the borough president about housing for seniors. Uh Manuel. You're on right now with borough president and Gibson. Um Good evening Mrs. Um Gibson. I wanna thank you for everything you have done for the Bronx Borough and all the work you have shared and you have parti participated in for all of us. Now I'm disabled and I've been having a problem with housing. Now I have a lot of medical issues that I deal with on a weekly basis with the hospital. I have a heart condition. I had two heart attacks already one recently and um, the hospital is trying to help me with housing. They, they even wanted to tell me that they'll write me a letter for whatever it is to whoever I need to give it to. I, I see all these new buildings being built up along where I'm staying at and they just built two new ones and I asked some of the owners if they can give me the office number and stuff like that. And they see me with a walker and I'm like, look, I'm disabled and, uh, as you can see, I got my heart thing on me and I'm, you know, it's hard for me to breathe and, and I'm telling them I'm on s si and I'm trying to get me a stable place where I could move around and even if I'm alone, but I have a home health aide that they do not let it into the shelter because of my condition because I sustained a man's shelter on Andrew's Island and they wouldn't let her in. So now I'm staying in a family member house and I feel uncomfortable there. It's not really that much room for me to move around in and I have a problem falling and this is all documented. Now, they got me wearing a helmet because I fall a lot and they don't want me to bust my head and bleed out with blood in front of the blood thinners that I'm on. So now I walk around with a helmet and that's embarrassing as it is. But I'm, I'm just trying my best to find a housing situation and I've been dealing with housing since 2012 when I was in the ads are low for, is there a way we can? So we will follow up? Absolutely. So he started through the New York City emergency shelter system and left and now he's staying with someone, a relative. So the challenge is, is we have to get him eligible for something we have to find out his income, household size. There, there are many places that do accommodate home health aides in terms of your household size and the apartment. So we will talk offline about his specific condition. But many of the new construction, I'll say there is a small set aside for people with disabilities, but it's very small. It's like 5%. And that's something again that doesn't reach the po population the most in need. We have a big issue with supply. Uh We've talked a lot about the present here in the Bronx. Uh, as we close out the hour, we're gonna talk about the past with Bronx Week in the future. Events coming up in our borough, that borough president Gibson is involved with. So, CCNY studio awards ceremony we're doing on Thursday, May 23rd at Bronx Borough Hall from 130 to 4:30 p.m. Then Friday May 24th, our second annual prom dress and suit giveaway at P 188 X at 730 Concourse Village West from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28th. At the Memorial Day. We have the African Union flag raising at Borough Hall at 851 grand concourse from 2 to 5 p.m. We also have Monday June 3rd 11 a.m. Our pride flag raising for pride month at 851 grand concourse. And we're also doing a voter registration with NYC votes also Monday, June 3rd 12 to 5 at 851 Grand concourse at Borough Hall on Thursday, June 6th. We have our Puerto Rican flag raising ceremony from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We also have our Veterans Women's Resource fair at the James J Peters VA Hospital on Wednesday, June 12 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. We invite all female veterans to join us Friday. June 14th. We're doing our pride celebration at bistros at 135 Alexander at 6:30 p.m. We're having a June 10th celebration and African Business Expo at Poe Park 1 92nd at East Kingsbridge Road, Saturday, June 15th from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. On Thursday, June 20th, we have our Muslim leaders round ship, round table, sorry discussion at 851 grand concourse at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 20th and Saturday, June 22nd at 11 a.m. We have our pride March starting at 851 grand concourse. Wow, I'm tired just listening to it and we're just coming off Bronx week. Uh So, so what sticks out from Bronx week? Bronx week was amazing. Our message was we want more in 2024. And we started with a press conference at the Chase Community Center. We had an LGBTI A plus uh task force mixer. We had the labor leaders breakfast. We had a banker breakfast, Silent Disco, a health day at the Y MC A in the northeast Bronx. We had a grand concours walking tour. The Bronx turns 110 years old. This year we had a veterans appreciation luncheon. We had a BX factor for small businesses, our centenarian event, the Bronx Ball, the grand finale, Bronx Parade, food and arts festival. And we inducted four amazing honorees, Andrea Navedo and actress Amadeus, our producer and musician, Ozzie Ver Hill senior, the first Dominican to break barriers in major league baseball. And we have Paloma Izquierdo Hernandez, who's the People's Choice Award winner in health Care, the President of Urban Health Plan. And we gave the key to the borough to John Sterling, the voice of the New York Yankees. Five years young lot's going on in the Bronx.
