A school assistant principal who was sick for several days with swine flu became the city's first death linked to the virus on Sunday.

More schools in New York City have also been closed and nearly 11,000 students across the city were asked to stay home Monday because of swine flu fears.

Flushing Hospital Medical Center spokesman Andrew Rubin says Mitchell Wiener, who worked at an intermediate school in Queens, died Sunday evening. Wiener, who had been hospitalized and on a ventilator, had been sick with the virus for nearly a week before his school was closed on Thursday. Complications in addition to the virus likely played a part in Wiener's death, says Rubin.

The New York State Department of Health says the number of swine flu cases in the city now stands at 186.
