An author who wrote an inspirational children's book about her blind brother spoke to young children at a Bronx school about overcoming difficulties.

Elaine Sussman performed for students at P.S. 114 Luis Lorens Torres School Tuesday, sharing with them her inspirational book, "The Boy Who Opened Our Eyes."

The book outlines how Sussman's family and friends take the initiative to help her younger brother, Mark, who is blind.

Characters in the book teach Mark how to enjoy life in the same way as a typical 6-year-old boy.

Through illustrations, Sussman says readers can experience how colors are redefined, foods have new tastes, touch is exquisitely revealing, and sounds have new relevance through a person who is vision impaired.

Sussman's brother also made an appearance during the performance at the school.
