Police say one person was killed Thursday from a crash in Highbridge.
Authorities responded to the corner of East 170th Street and Jerome Avenue around 9:30 a.m. They observed a scooter on the ground and the body of the victim 50 feet from the scooter.
First responders have confirmed that the victim in this crash was the driver of the scooter. They say the scooter was headed down East 170th Street toward Jerome Avenue when it collided with a box truck in the far lane.
The victim was found dead at the scene, according to the FDNY. Officials say that the force of the crash sent the scooter driver flying, causing him to suffer fatal head trauma. That victim has yet to be identified.
The truck driver did remain on the scene, and police have not filed any charges in this incident. Police say the scooter was stolen.
Residents told News 12 they aren’t surprised these kinds of collisions are happening at this intersection and that there are always safety risks that scooter drivers seem to ignore.
"They don't use helmets, they don't use the red light, they go across the red light, they're on the sidewalk... you can't even walk on the sidewalk," said witness Gerry Miner.
