Police say a man is dead and another is in critical condition following a
devastating crash early Sunday morning on the Major Deegan Expressway.
According to the NYPD, the fatal victim, identified as 22-year-old Justin Francisco, was struck twice. The first happened after he pulled over on the side of the expressway and got out of his car, which had broken down. Police say Francisco lost control of his 2018 Honda Accord on the wet road and struck a wall.
When Francisco got out to inspect the damage, a 61-year-old man driving down the road at that same time collided with Francisco's disabled car, pushing it forward to hit him.
Police say the impact was strong enough to throw the victim over the center wall of the expressway into oncoming traffic, where he was struck a second time by a Jeep Wrangler.
The 37-year-old man operating that car then lost control of his vehicle, leading it to strike a wall, overturn on its side and partially eject the driver out of his car. He is in the hospital in critical condition, police say.
When first responders arrived, they discovered Francisco and pronounced him dead at the scene.
It's unclear what the condition of the 61-year-old man is in. The investigation is ongoing.
