A 19-year-old swimmer who went missing in the water at Jacob Riis Park Beach on Friday night has been found dead.
Officials say first responders got the teen out of the water and to a hospital. However, he was pronounced dead during the night.
Officials tell News 12 they are following the currents and winds. However, they say weather and the possibility of storm conditions later will impact their ability to search.
The city’s Parks Department urges residents to only swim in areas where lifeguards are present.
Officials say there is a shortage of lifeguards this year. The area of Coney Island where the two teens were swept away was closed and not staffed, according to authorities.
The department says swimmers who find themselves in a rip current should swim parallel to shore and with the current in order to get out.
Officials also remind swimmers to pay attention to red flags indicating that certain areas are unsafe.
