A Bronx mother who started writing about her experiences with raising a son with autism online is being recognized during Autism Awareness Month.
Lisa Quinones says when her son, Norrin, was diagnosed with autism and global development delay in 2008, she found a way to document her family's new journey navigating autism with her blog Autism Wonderland.
She says the name comes from feeling like Alice herself – tumbling into a different world with new challenges.
Quinones says she taught herself while looking for resources to help her family, and that she realized there wasn't much out there.
After her family settled into their new life, Quinones started a new blog called Atypical Familia to share resources with other special needs families – covering topics from traveling with special needs to maintaining a work-life balance.
