A Bronx mother who thought she was keeping her child safe awoke to find her son not breathing.
Gladys Robles, who lives at 2078 Arthur Avenue, says she decided to take her 1-month-old son Christian to bed with her to keep him from being harmed by rats. But when she awoke the next morning, Christian was not breathing. He was later pronounced dead at Saint Barnabas Hospital. Robles says she never imagined that her effort to keep him safe would lead to his death. She says her apartment is infested with rodents and that just last week her family caught seven mice in one day.
The Department of Housing Preservation and Development says there are 376 open violations at the Arthur Avenue building. Officials say 10 of the 376 violations are in Robles' apartment.
The medical examiner is working to determine the cause of death.
