The first day of school is right around the corner, and nerves are running high for Neidy Cortez.
"As a first-year teacher, it definitely is nerve-wracking; I am a little anxious," she says.
Luckily though, Cortez is no stranger to the classroom. The new ELA teacher has substituted before and knows how to reach her students. She'll be working at M.S. 50 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Meanwhile, new math teacher Chris Altiery is preparing some high-tech tools and reviewing math problems.
It's a big change for Altiery, who recently switched careers after nearly a decade in law.
Altiery and Cortez are in good company this year. M.S. 50 hired six new teachers due to high enrollment.
