In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Bangladeshi Bronx residents are sharing how they've brought their culture to a street in the Parkchester section.
When Mohammed Mujumder arrived from Bangladesh in 1989, he says there was only one grocery store owned by Bangladeshi Americans. Thirty-four years later, more than 40,000 Bangladeshis call Parkchester home – fulfilling roles in politics and business.
Restaurant owner Khaliur Rahman is one of them. His shop, Khalil Biryani House, sits among dozens of supermarkets and shops lining Bangla Bazaar. The bazaar houses more than 100 businesses, including some that serve authentic Bangladeshi cuisine.
For anyone looking for their next party dress, in the mood for authentic Bangladeshi food, or wanting to get a haircut – Bangla Bazaar has it all.
