Visitors to the Bronx Riviera aren’t happy about recent changes made to operating hours at Orchard Beach.
They say this week, temporary hours were posted with no warning, reducing access to the beach’s parking lot.
Whether it’s walking the dog, exercising, or just listening to the sound of the ocean, residents say they go to the beach for a number of reasons.
But now, they have to enjoy their day on the sand before 3 p.m. This week, the city’s Parks Department reduced the hours of operation at the beach to 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, closing at 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The NYPD tells News 12 there were complaints about large parties and people not social distancing and that's what led to the change.
The Parks Department released a statement saying, "In consideration of public safety, we've reduced hours of operation at Orchard Beach Parking Lot to address noise, vehicle and illegal activity complaints.”
They say the parking lot at Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn, which is operated by a concessionaire, is the only other city beach with temporary hours.
