In an effort to maintain business as restaurants prepare for limited operations, the Belmont Business Improvement District wants shoppers to know that Arthur Avenue will have a cleaning service throughout the day and indefinitely to keep common areas disinfected.
Members of the cleaning service are disinfecting commonly touched areas to avoid the spread of germs and the coronavirus.

Monday afternoon they were seen wiping down the door handles of storefronts, parking meters, and ATMs. The cleaning service is usually responsible for picking up trash in front of the stores, but that has now fallen on the businesses as keeping the neighborhood disinfected has become a top priority.
The service will focus on the outside, while the stores will continue to clean the inside of the businesses on their own.
Peter Madonia owns Madonia Bakery and says, "We have always been responsible for making sure our places are clean. We're very diligent about that as a business community, so this is really about the external, and we're doing as much as we can as often as we can. It's just part of an effort to do the right thing as we're by being directed by the health professional."
Peter says his grandfather opened the bakery in 1918 during the influenza pandemic. Following that was the Great Depression and World War II.
So he says the neighborhood has gone through a lot which makes them resilient and that they will get through the coronavirus too.
