The Belmont community co-named a street in honor of Monsignor John Ruvo on Wednesday.
Belmont Avenue at East 187th street is now co-named Monsignor John A. Ruvo Way.
Ruvo was a man cherished by multiple generations in his community and exemplified courage and sacrifice in the service of others.
We're happy today, to be here today, to do this,” Belmont Business Executive board member Frank Franz told News 12. “Just walking out, I see a lot of people I haven't seen in years who moved away from the neighborhood over the years. But all came back to honor his memory.”
Ruvo passed away from COVID. While in the hospital he was offered a ventilator, but refused to take it and said to give it to a younger man.
“As a priest, he taught the importance of giving back and caring for each other and helping each other in every way possible,” added Franz. “And that is the message that continues to live on today in this moment.”
