Mayor Bloomberg (R-NYC) is reportedly set to make some big changes for schools in the Bronx and the rest of the city. The Daily News reports the mayor wants to reform the education system and will hire outside help for part of it. The report claims Bloomberg is looking to double the number of empowerment schools in the city from 300 to 600. The help would come from private education companies that would be hired as consultants or managers. Bloomberg would then have those consultants or managers oversee the principals in the schools. School officials say state law requires that principals are supervised by public employees. United Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten called the plan "reckless."The report says Bloomberg also wants to reduce the 10 existing regional school districts into five superdistricts.
