The body of a fallen FDNY firefighter was brought back to East Islip Friday.
Jesse Gerhard died Thursday, two days after battling a house fire in Queens.
Firefighters lined the street and saluted as first responders carried his casket into Chapey Funeral Home.
"He was a good-hearted kid," says Salvatore Triscritti, a firefighter with the Islip Fire Department.
Gerhard was a seven-year veteran with FDNY and also volunteered in Islip.
He responded to a two-alarm fire in Far Rockaway on Tuesday.
The FDNY says on Wednesday he collapsed at the Ladder 134 firehouse. He died early Thursday. It's not clear if Gerhard's death is linked to the fire.
Triscritti says when you work as a first responder, each day could be your last.
"You got to enjoy life and appreciate every moment," Trischitta. "You wonder every day if they're going to come home."
The FDNY is investigating the cause of Gerhard's death.
A wake will be held for Gerhard on Feb. 22 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Frederick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home in East Islip.
Gerhard will be laid to rest on Feb. 23 at 1:30 p.m.at St. Patricks Roman Catholic Church in Bay Shore, Long Island.
