As the Castle Hill branch of the New York Public Library undergoes a multiyear renovation, a new chapter is unfolding on the streets of The Bronx. A vibrant red and white Bookmobile is rolling through the borough, bringing books, library services, and smiles to neighborhoods in need of literary love.
On Aug. 29, residents of Castle Hill were surprised to learn that their local library would remain closed until the Fall season of 2027.
"I was like, that's a bummer," said Valerie Torres, a longtime library patron. "That’s the only library close enough for me to walk to."
But just steps away from the neighborhood bodega, a van full of books for all ages ready to change the narrative.
"Wow, I have that book! Wow, look at this!" said one Patricia McCarter as she walked past the van, taken aback by the mobile library’s extensive selection.
For many, the Bookmobile is more than a novelty - it’s a vital resource for the community.
"The choice of books [that] they have out here? Oh my gosh, it’s amazing," said McCarter. "The fact that they are here while they're remodeling the library is not taking anything away from the community."
With fewer than 10 bookstores across the Bronx - and over 8 million residents - access to books and learning materials remains a challenge for many. That’s why the New York Public Library’s books on wheels service is hitting the streets, offering everything from free library cards to book returns, staff recommendations, and more.
"I like that they're still trying to give people a chance to get books and learn," said Jacob, a local teen. "Get their education, a diploma... a degree and succeed."
And for those stopping by, the Bookmobile offers more than just books - it provides hope, community, and a reminder that learning doesn’t have to pause just because a building is closed.
While the Castle Hill branch gets renovated with new furniture, tech upgrades and an HVAC system, the Bookmobile continues to serve its mission: making reading accessible to all.
The Bookmobile will be parked at Castle Hill and Quimby Avenue on Aug. 4th and twice weekly on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Serrano Playground and on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. outside of Castle Hill Library on the corner of Quimby Avenue. For more dates and locations, visit the
