Performers from three hit shows took the stage for Bronx residents at Fordham Plaza on Friday, as Broadway In The Boros returns following a pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is the fifth year of the series, designed by the mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment to bring free Broadway theater to New Yorkers in all boroughs.
Brooklyn, first in the season’s lineup, celebrated the series last month, with the Bronx getting the chance to observe Broadway theater today.
The crowds cheered, sang along, and gave standing ovations to the talented musicians and performers during the summer-like fall afternoon.
Bronx residents were treated to performances by Wicked, Moulin Rouge and Kinky Boots.
“For me, this is a chance to bring Broadway right here to the borough, to make sure that residents are able to experience the Broadway experience without getting on a train and going to Manhattan,” said Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson.
Melinda Pagan stumbled upon the performance with her two daughters who have never been to Broadway. By the end of the show, here 9-year-old said she hopes to take the stage one day.
“Finally, they’re doing something for the community,” says Pagan. “It’s wonderful that they’re doing this.”
The final Broadway In The Boros performance is next Friday on Staten Island.
