A Bronx assemblyman is pushing to get a pedestrian island in Kingsbridge redesigned, claiming that the traffic lane is too wide for vehicles turning left at the intersection of Van Cortlandt Avenue West and Sedgwick Avenue.

In March, an 84-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle turning left at the intersection outside a supermarket. A crash that occurred a week later sent a left-turning vehicle onto the pedestrian island.

Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz says he has been pushing to get the location redesigned for three years, starting with the median. He says he met with both commissioners of the city's Department of Transportation about the intersection, and the agency promised to redo the the pedestrian structure.

The DOT has installed caution signs, but Dinowitz says the change doesn't go far enough.

In a letter that was sent in January, Dinowitz says the DOT informed him that it was in the process of finalizing a redesign plan for the island.

News 12 reached out to the DOT, but has not yet heard back.
