The Dominican flag was raised on Monday at Bronx Borough Hall for the first time ever ahead of Tuesday’s celebration of 180 years of Dominican independence.
Deputy Bronx Borough President Janet Peguero says that the Bronx is home to the largest Dominican population in New York City, making Monday’s commemoration that much more special.
"It's significant for us because we are the home of the diaspora and so today is really a celebration of Dominican heritage, Dominican culture and Dominican independence,” said Peguero.
The celebration didn’t stop there – 70 Dominican-Americans received their dual citizenship.
