A legal aid organization in the Bronx is making sure that "justice for all" includes everyone – especially for those in the LGBTQ+ community.
Yajaira Gual always knew she was different, and when her family found out that she was transgender, they didn't react well. Without their support, Yajaira was forced to live on her own in New York City, often ending up in dangerous situations and eventually being incarcerated.
Yajaira got connected with the nonprofit Bronx Defenders and things started to turn around. Through their LGBTQ+ defense project, the organization worked to settle Yajaira's case through a women's prison program instead of a trial and potential jail time.
