Stevenson Family Health Center in the Bronx is marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month by giving out free mammograms.
The American Cancer Society says not getting a regular mammogram screening can increase your risk of dying from cancer. That's why a huge bus is at the center every month to make getting a screening easier.
Mount Sinai partnered with Stevenson Family Health Center to conduct free cancer screenings. Mammograms are X-rays of your breast to check for early signs of cancer. Doctors say mammograms can detect breast cancer much earlier than a self-evaluation - sometimes even three years sooner.
They add that women in their 40s and older should get a mammogram every two years because it can mean the difference between life and death.
These screenings happen every month on the third Thursday, but next month will be on a Wednesday because of the Thanksgiving holiday. The mammograms are free, but insurance, if available, will be charged. Uninsured women in the Bronx will be seen for free.
The mobile van schedule can be seen below:
Nov. 23, Stevenson Family Health Center – 731 White Plains Road
Dec. 1, Mount Hope Family Practice – 130 West Tremont
