With a major winter storm expected to hit the Bronx this weekend, emergency rooms are preparing ahead.
Doctors at Lincoln Hospital are urging people to slow down, stay indoors if possible, and take extra precautions if they must head outside.
Associate Chair of Emergency Medicine Dr. Lee Donner says storms like this typically lead to a spike in slip-and-fall injuries, as well as muscle strains and back injuries, especially from shoveling heavy, wet snow.
He recommends pacing yourself, dressing in warm layers, and knowing when a trip to the emergency room is truly necessary.
“For minor injuries or cold-related illnesses, it’s best to call your doctor first when possible,” Donner said.
Dr. Donner emphasized that anyone experiencing a true emergency should not hesitate to seek care.
“If you think you’re having an emergency, come to the hospital,” he said. “We’re going to be here for you.”
Doctors are also warning about hidden dangers during winter storms, including carbon monoxide poisoning from alternative heating methods.
Dr. Donner says symptoms can include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and confusion, and if multiple people in a home experience symptoms at the same time, it’s critical to call 911 immediately.
Space heaters are another major concern. Doctors say they should never be left unattended, as they are a common cause of winter fires.
Despite the storm, Dr. Donner says the hospital is fully staffed and prepared for whatever comes in, noting that major storms don’t always lead to overwhelming patient surges.
