Police say this followed a heated public argument between Marquis Lane and Brittany Ward - one that cost Lane his life in front of his then 2-year-old son.

The family of a man who was fatally shot in 2023 is fighting to get their son's suspected killer behind bars for good.

Aaron Rene is accused of fatally shooting 31-year-old Marquis Lane on Feb. 7, 2023.

Rene is the boyfriend of Brittany Ward, who is the mother of Lane's child.

Police say this followed a heated public argument between Lane and Ward - one that cost Lane his life in front of his then 2-year-old son.

Lane's mother, Cemecca Lane, says she has been fighting to ensure her son gets the justice he deserves.

She says she is outraged at learning that after arraignment, Ward and Rene have been able to walk freely in ankle monitors.

"How do I explain to a 9-year-old kid that the people that killed your dad are still outside in the street with ankle monitors on?" Cemecca Lane said.

Lane was at Bronx Family Court to face Ward and Rene in an ongoing case.

Cemecca says she has been filled with "anxiety," hoping that the judge will decide to reverse the decision to allow Rene and Ward to be able to wear ankle bracelets, instead of spending time behind bars.

"If I had one wish, I want them to sit in jail until it's time for their trial," says Lane. "Because it's not fair."

Lane says she will continue to fight for her son, as she prepares for their next upcoming case in September.
