One family in Kingsbridge Heights says their child is missing out on important class time because her school bus rides are lasting three hours each way.
Carol Gaston and her daughter, Madison, are tired of the tardy transportation.
“She’s missing her first two periods of school,” Carol said. “She’s missing her [Applied Behavior Analysis] afternoon therapy for her autism.”
The 17-year-old is a senior at Bronx Legacy High School on Roosevelt Island.
The family said this is the first school year where they’re having bus issues.
The long commute has the teenager feeling frustrated and fatigued.
“I try to stay awake during the classes, but sometimes I start to doze off,” Madison said. “I try to stay awake, but it’s getting harder to do that.”
In addition, Madison told News 12 that her bus was recently involved in a car crash in Highbridge.
“I heard a big crash noise, and then I saw the damage that happened,” Madison said.
The family gave News 12 photos of shattered glass on the bus seats and floor.
“To this day, I have not gotten any correspondence from the bus company, from the bus matron, from anybody, Carol said. “She’s now afraid to get on the bus.”
The Bronx mother is now demanding answers.
“Get onboard, look into this and change her bus,” Carol said.
A Department of Education spokesperson sent News 12 the following statement: "Providing our students with safe and reliable transportation is our top priority. We have been in contact with the student's family and our vendor, Lessel Transportation, to investigate the matter and have since issued appropriate violations. We are continuously working with our vendors to ensure the safety of our students and to provide timely service for all routes."
News 12 also reached out to Lessel Transportation for comment but has not heard back.
