A Bronx family’s concerns are growing as they say their loved one is stranded in the Dominican Republic in a coma.
His sister, Yvonne Davenport, is concerned about her 29-year-old brother Melson Garcia, who went on vacation to the Dominican Republic and fell ill in his hotel room on Monday night.
Garcia’s family says he has diabetes, and they believe he entered a diabetic coma. They say he is still in the hospital in Punta Cana.
“We’ve all very worried, scared,” said Yvonne. “We don’t know what’s going to happen. It’s literally life or death.”
The challenge in front of the Garcia family is bringing their loved one Melson back to New York, despite facing medical bills worth thousands of dollars.
The issue comes down to health insurance and being unable to speak to their brother who is still ill.
The family told News 12 that they have been reaching out to local leaders, including Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, who they say they’re meeting with next week.
The family also set up a GoFundMe page.
